The Rebbe said this discourse on Shabbat Bereishit, 1969. Shabbat was the day before Rosh Chodesh (the New Moon), so a special Haftorah is said, beginning 'Jonathan said to David, tomorrow is Rosh Chodesh. You will be noticed because you will be missing..' (I Samuel 20:28). In the Biblical narrative, David would be absent from a meal with King Saul, and Saul would notice this and therefore comment about him. The discourse discusses this idea in spiritual terms. By not being there, i.e. by being in a state of self-abnegation, one is present in a greater way.
