Atah Echad Vayetze

Vayeitze | Genesis | 5729

This discourse was delivered by the Rebbe on Shabbat Parshat Vayetze, 5729 (1969). The Shabbat Mincha prayer includes 'Atah Echad, You are One', and the Previous Rebbe asks why 'One' (Echad) is used instead of 'Unique' (Yachid). The discourse explains that the word Echad expresses the unity of many parts brought together, and applies this to both G-d's unity and the unity of the Jewish people, whose diverse members are unified when they recognise their common divine source.
