This discourse was delivered by the Rebbe on Shabbat Parshat Mattot-Masei, 5726 (1966). The Sedra opens with Moses instructing the tribal leaders about the laws of vows, and the Rebbe asks why one should make additional restrictions beyond those commanded by the Torah. The discourse explains that the purpose of Creation is to make a dwelling for G-d in the lower world, and that Jews must engage with the physical realm through Torah and Mitzvot, transforming it rather than withdrawing from it through unnecessary vows.
