This discourse was delivered by the Rebbe on Shabbat Parshat Yitro, 5745 (1985). The Sedra opens with Jethro hearing what G-d did for Israel and coming to Moses, and Rashi comments that what he heard was the Splitting of the Sea. The discourse asks why Jethro's declaration 'now I know that G-d is greater than all other powers' was, according to the Zohar, a necessary step before the Giving of the Torah, exploring how Jethro's recognition from the outside was needed to complete the revelation from within.
